BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team never trailed on Saturday afternoon as the Hokies knocked off Mount St. Mary’s at Cassell Coliseum, 59-42.
Hannah Young, a game after tying the Cassell Coliseum record with six 3-pointers, hit five from outside as she scored 15 points and had six rebounds. Vanessa Panousis had 12 points and six rebounds while Chanette Hicks had eight points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Tech won its eighth straight game and improved to 10-1 on the season while Mount St. Mary’s fell to 2-8.
“We’re never going to look down our noses at a win, but this was the worst game we’ve played all year,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “You can probably look for some excuses, but I’m really not interested in pawning it off on exams or Christmas. We have to play a lot better than this. With that being said, we won, and I commend their effort.”
Up 11-6, the Hokies used a 13-0 run midway through the first quarter to pull away from Mount St. Mary’s and take a 26-11 lead. The run was sparked by a Panousis 3-pointer with 3:08 left in the first and included Samantha Hill going 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
The Hokies jumped out in front, shooting 50.0-percent from the floor in the first quarter, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. In the second quarter, the Hokies only shot 4-of-17 but were able to limit the Mountaineers to just 29.2-percent in the first half.
Mount St. Mary’s had a 7-0 run midway through the second quarter to bring the Mountaineers within 30-18. The Hokies answered with back-to-back 3-pointers from Young and Rachel Camp and took a 38-19 lead into halftime.
The Hokies held at least a 20-point lead throughout much of the second half. MSM cut it down to 18 coming out of the break, but Tech again extended its advantage, going up 53-27 to take its largest lead of the game off a 3-pointer from Young to open the fourth. The Mountaineers held the scoring advantage in the final period 15-9, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Hokies.
Tech’s defense pressured MSM into 18 turnovers while the Hokies only committed eight, turning it into a 21-6 edge in points off turnovers. For the game, Tech shot 39.1-percent, 9-of-23 from 3-point range.
Tech will return to the floor on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. as the Hokies host Radford University.
