BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team bounced back after Wednesday’s game to roll past the Big East’s Providence 62-46 on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Sidney Cook led all scorers with 16 points while pulling down a game-high eight rebounds. Chanette Hicks added 10 points. Taijah Campbell chipped in nine points and seven rebounds while Hannah Young tallied seven points, six rebounds and five assists.
“I applaud the team for the effort they put forth,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “After a long night Wednesday and a short turnaround they played very good defense throughout the entire game. Sid had a good game offensively, but I think as a team we’re going to need to be a little more efficient on the offensive side as we go along.”
Virginia Tech (3-1) controlled the first half from the opening tip as the Hokies started the game with an 11-0 run. The Friars (0-3) got on the board, but Tech held a 14-7 advantage at the end of the first. The second frame played out much like the first as Tech outscored Providence 14-4 to take the 28-11 lead into the break.
In the third quarter the Friars kept it a bit closer, but the Hokies were able to open it up, scoring seven unanswered points fueled by a pair of layups from Campbell just past the mid point of the frame. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way with Tech ultimately outscoring Providence 20-15 in the third to go on top 48-26 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Virginia Tech took its largest lead of the game with 4:22 to go, up 58-33 off a layup from Hicks. Providence responded with a 13-0 run to cut it down to a 12-point Hokie lead with just under two minutes remaining. That would be the last points the Friars scored in the game as Tech’s Khadedra Croker and Alana Gilmer scored the final four to give the Hokies the 16-point win.
Tech connected on 48.9 percent from the field and utilized its size with 32 points in the paint to 16 from Providence. The Friars shot 31.6 percent from the field. The Hokies held a 38-35 advantage on the boards.
Aliyah Miller had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Friars while Clara Che came in off the bench for eight.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Nov. 22 to host College of Charleston at 5 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
