Tech to host George Mason on Sunday

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set to host George Mason on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.

THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech opened the season with a 58-44 decision over Presbyterian. The Hokies were led by Vanessa Panousis with 16 points, six assists and three rebounds. Regan Magarity added 14 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Hannah Young chipped in eight points.

The Hokies trailed by two at the break after connecting on just 25 percent from the field in the first half. Tech came out firing in the third quarter, hitting 64.7 percent from the field including an 83.3 percent clip from outside the arc. The Hokies outscored the Blue Hose 28-11 in the third frame. Panousis led the charge, hitting a trio of three pointers in less than 90 seconds. Presbyterian was unable to overcome the deficit as the Hokies took the season opener.

Tech freshmen Chanette Hicks and Alana Gilmer made their first collegiate appearances against the Blue Hose. Hicks was sidelined with foul trouble in the first half, but came back to dish out four assists and pull down four rebounds in the second. Gilmer tallied her first collegiate points with a layup in the second quarter.

THE PATRIOTS
George Mason fell to Radford 66-63 in overtime to open the season. Taylor Brown led the Patriots with 17 points while handing out five assists and securing five steals. Kristi Mokube added 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Tiffany Padgett led on the boards with 11 rebounds.

THE SERIES
The Hokies lead the all-time series 5-3, but Tech fell 77-69 in the last meeting, falling in the season opener one year ago in Fairfax, Va. Magarity made her collegiate debut in that game, knocking down 25 points and grabbing seven rebounds to lead the Hokies. Taijah Campbell added 14 points and Panousis chipped in 11.

Brown led the Patriots in the game with 35 points and 11 boards. Former Patriots Sandra Ngoie and Talisha Watts were also strong for Mason with Ngoie tallying 15 points while Watts had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Up Next: Virginia Tech will take to the road, heading to Georgetown for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The game will be broadcast on Big East Network.
