BLACKSBURG, Va. - Seventeen points from sophomore Vanessa Panousis, a double-double from freshman Regan Magarity and 15 points from freshman Rachel Camp propelled the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team to a 60-49 win over the Norfolk State Spartans at Cassell Coliseum on Tuesday evening.

“Three games in five days is not easy for these guys to be playing,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I thought the effort defensively was very good; we contested a lot of shots. I was happy that Vanessa was able to step into some shots because she’s a good shooter. I thought the team and these two [Kelsey Conyers and Magarity] worked hard on defense and on the boards. It was a good win.”

A layup from Magarity got things started for the Hokies. Magarity’s bucket along with three pointers from Panousis and senior Conyers brought the Hokies to a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes.

Norfolk State began to fight back, however, bringing the game to 9-6 in favor of Tech. The two squads exchanged buckets with the Hokies’ freshman Rachel Camp adding five points in that stanza but Norfolk State would ultimately bring the game within one point (14-13) at the 12:23 minute mark.

The game would stay close for the next three minutes, but a Conyers three pointer at the 7:29 minute mark would start the Hokies on a 14-2 run that would put the Hokies comfortably ahead to end the half.

Tech went into the locker room with a 30-17 lead. At the break, Camp had tallied 10 points while Conyers added seven points of her own.

Norfolk State scored the first four points out of the break thanks to a pair of free throws from Rae Corbo and a layup from Kayla Roberts. Panousis answered with a three pointer to bring the score to 33-21.

The Spartans’ Aivah Parham added a pair of layups to bring the score back within 10 points, but Conyers would hit another three for the Hokies to put Tech ahead 36-25 with 13:29 on the clock.

Norfolk State continued to put the pressure on Tech with Corbo adding a pair of back-to-back buckets to bring the score back within seven, but the Hokies would again have an answer in the form of a three from Panousis and a fast-break lay in from Camp.

The Spartans and the Hokies continued to exchange points but Tech’s lead was insurmountable, as Tech ultimately won 60-49.

Magarity, who had a phenomenal night on the boards, became the first Hokie freshman to ever-record 17 rebounds in a game. Panousis tied her career high in three-point field goals made with five, only one away form tying the school record, and Conyers tied her career high in points with 10.

The Hokies are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 23, when Tech travels to Providence. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
