FAIRFAX, Va. – Freshman Regan Magarity dropped in 25 points, but the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell short at George Mason, 77-69 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams in Fairfax, Virginia.
“I thought we clearly didn’t have the right mind set for a road game with as many new kids as we have,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “We got off to kind of a false start and then didn’t play nearly hard enough when we needed to at different stretches of the game. I thought Regan was great, but I think we need to up the intensity level by everybody else.”
Magarity connected on 12-of-17 from the field to lead the Hokies (0-1) while tallying seven rebounds, three assists and a block in her collegiate debut. Taijah Campbell added 14 points and Vanessa Panousis recorded 11. Kelsey Conyers dished out a career-high six assists.
The Hokies came out strong in the opening period, getting out to an early 14-5 lead as Hannah Young dropped in a three-pointer with 15:36 on the clock. Tech maintained the lead and was up by eight (18-10) at 13:17 before both teams went on a drought over the next three and a half minutes. Mason broke it, sparking a 9-2 run to tie it up at 20 with 5:32 remaining in the half. The two teams were tied up again at 27 with just under three minutes to go, but the Patriots closed out the half with a 7-2 run to take a 34-29 lead into the break.
Mason extended its lead coming out of the intermission, going up 42-33 in the first three minutes of play. The Patriots were up 48-41 before the Hokies used a 7-1 run to cut it to 49-48 off a Panousis three-pointer. GM responded with a run of its own, taking it largest lead of the game up 62-52 with 5:07 to go. The Hokies again cut it, scoring on the next five trips down the court, closing it to 62-61 as Magarity laid one in with 3:03 on the clock.
That is as close as Tech would get in the final minutes with Mason using a 9-2 run to take the eight-point advantage going into the last 60 seconds. Tech cut it six with 48 seconds to go, but the Patriots connected on 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the final seconds to secure the win.
Taylor Brown led George Mason (1-0) with 35 points and 11 rebounds. Talisha Watts also added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Sandra Ngoie chipped in 15 points.
The Hokies will be back on the court when they return home on Sunday, Nov. 16 to host Maryland Eastern Shore at noon.
