BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior Uju Ugoka recorded her 15th double-double of the season, leading the Hokies with 23 points and 11 rebounds as the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeated Clemson, 74-48 on senior night at Cassell Coliseum.
“Very happy for the seniors to go out with a win in their last game in Cassell,” said Head Coach Dennis Wolff. “It’s good to be back at 500. It’s good, from my perspective, that we’re playing good basketball at this time of the year.”
Ugoka led all scorers in the game, connecting on 8-of-15 from the field while hitting 7-of-11 from the line. Vanessa Panousis turned in another strong performance for Tech (14-14, 4-11 ACC) with 13 points and five assists. Hannah Young added 10 points in the win.
All of Tech’s seniors tallied points in their final home game. Porschia Hadley recorded six, Nia Evans had five and Monet Tellier chipped in four points. With the win the Hokies recorded their third consecutive ACC win, marking the first time since 2007 that Tech has won three straight games in the league.
The Hokies and Tigers traded baskets early in the opening minutes with Tech taking the eight-point lead with 12:08 on the clock off a three-pointer from Young. Clemson scored the next five points to cut it down to a three-point difference a minute later, but the Hokies answered with a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 29-17 with 5:19 to go in the half. The Tigers would get no closer in the first half as Tech took a 34-22 lead in to the break.
Coming out of the break, the Tigers cut it down to a single-digit game with 15:07 to go as Kelly Gramlich sank a three-pointer. Virginia Tech answered with a 25-5 run over the next ten minutes, taking its largest lead of the game going up 29 (67-38) with 4:10 to play to put it out of reach and secure the win.
Nikki Dixon led Clemson (12-18, 4-12 ACC) with 13 points, while Chancie Dunn added 10 points. Quinyotta Pettaway grabbed seven rebounds for the Tigers.
The Hokies shot 48.3 (28-58) percent from the field, including a 57.1 (16-28) percent clip in the second. Tech went 7-of-14 from outside the arc. The Hokies dominated on the boards, grabbing 45 rebounds including 14 on the offensive glass resulting in 17 points. In addition, Tech turned the ball over just nine times while forcing 11 turnovers by the Tigers for 13 points.
Clemson connected on 34.6 (18-52) percent from the field and was 2-of-6 from outside the arc.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Sunday, March 2, when the Hokies travel to No. 9/7 Maryland. Game time is slated for 2 p.m., at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md.
