SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team struggled on the offensive end of the court on Thursday night as the Hokies fell to Syracuse, 73-48 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
“One of the few really disappointing nights we’ve had this year,” said Head Coach Dennis Wolff. “We were out of sync almost from the beginning and never really were able to get back in to it.”
The Hokies (11-11, 1-8 ACC) shot just 24.1 percent from the field on 13-of-54 while Syracuse (17-6, 6-4 ACC) connected on 24-of-61, hitting 39.3 percent from the field. SU tallied 38 points inside the paint to Tech’s 14.
Uju Ugoka led the Hokies with 15 points and 12 rebounds to record her 12th double-double of the season. Vanessa Panousis added 13 points.
The two teams kept it close early and were tied at 5-5 after three and a half minutes of play, but the Orange went on a 14-3 run to break open the scoring, taking a 19-8 lead with just over 11 minutes to play in the half. On the Hokies next possession, Ugoka completed a three-point play to pull Tech within eight, but that is as close as the Hokies would get in the opening half as Syracuse took the 43-22 lead in to the break.
Coming out of the break, Syracuse continued to be strong on the offensive side of the court and took its largest lead, up 35 (60-25) with 13:03 on the clock. The Hokies would get no closer than 25 the rest of the game.
Brittney Sykes led the Orange with 31 points. Cornelia Fondren and Briana Day had nine points each.
Tech allowed the Orange just three baskets from outside the arc, well below their average of 7.7 per game. The Hokies were strong from the line, hitting 71.4 percent (20-of-28).
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Sunday, Feb. 9 when the Hokies host NC State. It marks the Hokies annual Play4Kay event and fans are encouraged to wear pink for breast cancer awareness. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
