The Hokies
In their last game, the Hokies fell to No. 24/25 Florida State, 70-54, on Jan. 26 at the Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla. .

The Hokies shot over 40 percent in the opening half, but committed 15 turnovers as Florida State took an early lead and was up 42-20 at the break. Tech put together a strong second half, outscoring the Seminoles 34-28 and connecting on 45.8 percent from the field. The Hokies closed to within 11 with just under five minutes to go, but FSU held off Tech to secure the win.

Senior Uju Ugoka again led the Hokie offense on the day, tallying 22 points and 10 rebounds to record her 11th double-double of the season and third in as many games. Monet Tellier added 14 points for the Hokies.

Ugoka leads Tech on the season, averaging 20.2 points and 10.3 rebounds. The senior is one of three players in the Atlantic Coast Conference currently averaging a double-double. She is second in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding. Tellier is adding 11.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists while Vanessa Panousis is notching 10.7 points and chipping in 4.3 assists.

The Fighting Irish
No. 2/2 Notre Dame outlasted No. 8/6 Maryland, 87-83 the last time out on Jan. 27 in College Park, Md. The Irish led by as many as 22 in the opening half, but the Terrapins were able to cut it to 12 going in to the break. Maryland kept its momentum going and took its only lead of the game, up one midway through the second half. Notre Dame answered and reclaimed the lead, going up by eight in the final seven minutes, but the Terrapins again responded to cut it to one with 3:30 to go. That was as close as Maryland would get as ND held off the late charge for the win.

Jewell Loyd recorded 31 points in the contest while Kayla McBride added 20 for the Irish. Michaela Mabrey came off the bench to tally 13 points.

Loyd leads the way for the Fighting Irish, averaging 17.7 points per game. McBride is adding 16.7 ppg and Natalie Achonwa is chipping in 13.8 ppg and grabbing 8.2 rebounds per game. Michaela Mabrey rounds out the double-digit scoring for the Irish with 10.0 ppg.

The Series
This is only the sixth meeting all-time between the two programs and Notre Dame holds the lead in the series, 5-1. The two teams last met on Jan. 10, 2004 when both were members of the Big East Conference. Notre Dame picked up the 53-40 win at home. Tech’s lone win against the Irish was on Feb. 9, 2003 when the Hokies secured the 53-50 decision at Cassell Coliseum. Former Tech standout Ieva Kublina had 21 points in the game for the Hokies.

Up Next: The Hokies will return home to host Boston College. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2 at Cassell Coliseum.
