The Hokies
In its last game, Virginia Tech fell to Virginia 67-60 at Cassell Coliseum on Jan. 9 to open the 2013-14 ACC home slate.

The Hokies took an early 17 point lead in the first half, but the Cavaliers answered to cut it down to a 10 point difference (36-36) going in to the break. In the second half, the Hokies again hit early baskets, extending their lead to 14 in the opening two minutes. The two teams traded baskets and Tech led 51-41 with 11:39 to go. Tech still held the lead and was up 57-52 with 7:28 remaining, but the Cavaliers closed out the game with a 15-3 run to rally for the win.

Uju Ugoka led the Hokies’ offense on the day with 24 points and nine rebounds. Monet Tellier and Vanessa Panousis tallied 10 points each. Nia Evans pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds while Taijah Campbell recorded a career-best seven blocks.

Ugoka leads Tech on the season, averaging 19.7 points and 10.6 rebounds. The senior is one of three players in the Atlantic Coast Conference currently averaging a double-double. She is second in the conference in scoring and tied for second in rebounding. Panousis is adding 11.0 points and chipping in 4.7 assists. Tellier is averaging 10.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

The Hurricanes
Miami fell in a close contest against No. 18 Florida State, 68-63, in its last game, a Jan. 9 contest in Tallahassee.

Krystal Saunders dropped in 16 points for the ‘Canes while Caprice Dennis came off the bench to add 15 points. Jassany Williams recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Adrienne Motley handed out five assists for the offense.

Miami and Virginia Tech both fell to Richmond in the non-conference schedule. Miami dropped a 57-50 decision on Nov. 10 while the Hokies faltered 64-56 on Nov. 27.

Dennis leads the Hurricanes on the season with 13.5 points per game in 11 games played. Suriya McGuire is adding 10.7 points while Keyona Hayes rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.6 ppg. Williams is pulling down a team-best 7.5 rebounds per game and has tallied 34 blocks on the season.

The Series
Tech is 6-11 against Miami in the all-time series and this marks the first time the two have met since last season’s opening round of the ACC Tournament. The Hurricanes held on for the 45-39 win in Greensboro as Tellier and Ugoka each had 11 points in the contest. Miami was led by former player Shawnice Wilson with 17 points.

Up Next: The Hokies remain home and will host Duke on Sunday, Jan. 19 at noon in Cassell Coliseum. The game will be televised on Regional Sports Network (RSN).
