CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After trailing by 13 with just over eight minutes remaining, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team came back to cut it two, but Boston College held off the Hokies for the 70-63 win on Sunday afternoon in the ACC opener for both teams.
“There was no question that our team had a will to win,” said Head Coach Dennis Wolff. “But if you’re going to win an ACC game on the road then you’re going to have to have more discipline every possession, particularly at the end of the game.”
Uju Ugoka led the Hokies (10-4, 0-1 ACC) with 23 points and eight rebounds. Monet Tellier added 17 points while shooting 80 percent (8-of-10) from the field. Freshman Vanessa Panousis turned in her second double-digit assist game of the season, tallying 10, while Taijah Campbell also grabbed eight boards for Tech.
Both teams shot over 45 percent from the field as Tech connected on 27-of-58 and BC hit 26-of-56, but the Eagles dropped in 10 three-pointers to the Hokies’ five.
Tech and BC were tied at 12 after the opening nine minutes of the game, before Boston College went on a 9-2 run to take a 21-14 lead with 7:46 to go. Virginia Tech answered with a 9-2 run of its own to tie it back up at 23 with just under five minutes remaining in the first half, but the Eagles closed out the half with another run to take the 32-25 lead in to the break.
The Hokies came out of the break outscoring the Eagles 7-3 in the opening minute to cut the lead down to 35-32, but BC responded with an 11-5 run to pull in front 46-37 with 12:47 on the clock. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes before the Eagles used a short run to take their largest lead of the game, up 13 with 7:54 to play.
That would be BC’s last field goal for the next four minutes as the Hokies went on a 9-0 run, cutting it to 60-56 off a layup from Ugoka with 4:18 to go. Another three pointer from the Eagles broke the drought on BC’s next possession, but Panousis responded with one of her own on the other end to keep the four-point difference. Tech got baskets on back-to-back trips down the court as the Hokies closed within two (65-63) with 1:35 remaining, but BC hit the final two baskets of the game to hold off the Hokies and secure the win.
Kristen Doherty and Nicole Boudreau each had 16 points for the Eagles (10-5, 1-0 ACC). Katie Zenevitch added 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Kelly Hughes rounded out the double-digit scoring with 12 points.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Thursday, Jan. 9 when the Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum to face in-state rival Virginia in the ACC home opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
