Hokies open 2014 at Hampton
Tech faces Hampton on New Year's Day at 4 p.m.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team will open 2014 on the road, traveling to Hampton University on Wednesday, Jan. 1 for its final non-conference game of the season. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Hampton, Va.

The Hokies
The last time out, Virginia Tech defeated Robert Morris, 70-64, on Sunday, Dec. 29 at Cassell Coliseum.

Robert Morris kept it close in the opening half, but the Hokies took the 34-31 lead in to halftime. Tech extended its lead early in the second period, going up 40-34 as Uju Ugoka dropped in three layups. The Hokies led by as much as eight in the second half, but the Colonials came back to tie it up at 43 just shy of the midway point. Tech again took the lead, but RMU tied it up again at 54 with under six minutes to go. Robert Morris took its first lead at 57-56 with 4:53 on the clock. The final minutes went back and forth with the teams trading the lead four times before the Hokies got out to a 65-61 advantage with a minute and half to go. Tech connected on 5-of-7 from the line in the final minute to close out the game for the win.

Monet Tellier and Vanessa Panousis led the Hokies as each recorded double-doubles in the game. Tellier tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds while Panousis recorded 15 points and 10 assists. Ugoka added 16 points in the win.

Ugoka leads Tech on the season, averaging 19.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. She is one of four players in the ACC currently averaging a double-double, ranking third in scoring and second in rebounding. Panousis is adding 11.7 points per game and handing out 4.8 assists per game to rank fourth in the league in apg. Tellier is tallying 10.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.

The Pirates
Hampton dropped an 89-70 decision at Georgia Tech in the team’s last outing on Dec. 30 in Atlanta, Ga. Malia Tate-DeFreitas dropped in 27 points for the Pirates while Nicole Hamilton added 15. Alyssa Bennett tallied 12 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals. Kenia Cole rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 points.

Virginia Tech is the second ACC opponent that the Pirates have faced this season and the second in as many games following the contest at Georgia Tech.

Tate-DeFreitas is leading the team with 18.6 points per game. Bennett is adding 16.9 points and a team-best 9.0 rebounds per game. Hamilton is tallying 14.4 points and has handed out 77 assists this season.

The Series
Virginia Tech leads the all-time series, 4-0 and won the most recent meeting, 55-45 last season on Dec. 30, 2012. Tellier led Virginia Tech with 14 points and six rebounds. Former Tech player Alyssa Fenyn added 11 points in the win. Hamilton had 17 points for the Pirates and former HU player Keiara Avant tallied 12 points and 14 boards.

Up Next: The Hokies will open the ACC slate on Sunday, Jan. 5 at Boston College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The game will be broadcast on Regional Sports Network (RSN).
