The Hokies
The last time out, Virginia Tech defeated USC Upstate, 65-61, on Sunday, Dec. 15 at Cassell Coliseum.

The first half was back-and-forth with four ties and four lead changes as neither team led by more than two possessions. Tech trailed 25-24 going in to the break. Coming out of the intermission, Monet Tellier connected on back-to-back baskets to put the Hokies up, but Upstate responded with four unanswered points. The Hokies then went on a 8-0 run, sparked by five points from Uju Ugoka, to go on top for good just shy of the midway point of the half.

Ugoka led the Hokies with her seventh double-double of the season and fifth in as many games, tallying 27 points and 13 rebounds. It marks just the second time in program history that a Tech player has recorded five consecutive double-doubles. Karen Garbis posted six straight in 1978. Hannah Young added 11 points, while Taijah Campbell grabbed 12 rebounds. Tellier dished out six assists and picked up three steals.

Ugoka leads Tech on the season, averaging 19.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. She is one of four players in the ACC currently averaging a double-double, ranking fourth in scoring and second in rebounding in the league. Vanessa Panousis is adding 11.3 points per game while Tellier is tallying 10.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game, the third-most apg in the ACC.

The Highlanders
Radford dropped a 67-53 decision to William & Mary in the team’s last outing on Dec. 18 in Williamsburg, Va. Breshara Gordon had 16 points to lead a trio of Highlanders in double-digits. Aisha Foy added 13 points and Kiera McIvor tallied 11. Jordynn Gaymon grabbed 14 rebounds while Ayana Avery pulled down 10 boards and handed out five assists.

Virginia Tech and Radford have both played Old Dominion this season. The Highlanders fell to ODU, 56-37 on Nov. 17. Tech picked up the 73-61 win in Norfolk on Nov. 11. Radford has also faced two other ACC teams this season, falling to Wake Forest (92-65) and Clemson (41-39).

Avery is leading the team with 12.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Foy is adding 9.2 ppg while Gordon is tallying 7.9 ppg and leads the team with 30 assists on the year.

The Series
Virginia Tech holds the 22-9 lead in the all-time series and won the last meeting, 68-54, on Dec. 21, 2010 in Blacksburg. Tellier recorded 17 points in the win, while Nia Evans added 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Gordon, a freshman at the time, is the only Highlander still on the team from the last meeting; she recorded four points, two rebounds and an assist in eight minutes of play.

Up Next: The Hokies will take some time off for the holidays before returning home to host Robert Morris on Sunday, Dec. 29. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
