NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Monet Tellier and sophomore Taijah Campbell tallied 19 points each to lead the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team to a 73-61 win over in-state foe Old Dominion on Monday evening in Norfolk, Va. The Hokies improve to 2-0 on the season while ODU falls to 1-1.
“I think any time you can get a road win against a good team in a hard-fought game you have to be very happy with it,” said Virginia Tech Head Coach Dennis Wolff. “I’m really proud of the toughness our team showed in the final 10 minutes of the game.”
Campbell recorded her first career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Tellier added 19 points, pulled down six rebounds and handed out four assists. Hannah Young recorded her second double-double in as many games with 10 points and 10 boards. Freshman Vanessa Panousis added 12 points for the Hokies.
“Taijah was fabulous,” Wolff said. “I thought Hannah made huge plays there at the end and I thought Vanessa did a very good job considering how much they were pressuring.”
The Hokies and Lady Monarchs battled back and forth in the opening half with nine ties and five lead changes. ODU held the largest lead of the half up four at 24-20 with just over eight minutes to go, but a three from Maddison Penn followed by a Tellier layup put the Hokies on top by one a minute later. The two teams traded points in the final minutes and entered the break tied at 35-35.
Coming out of the break, Panousis knocked down a three pointer to spark a 7-0 run and give the Hokies a 42-35 lead after the opening minute. The Hokies maintained their lead and were up by five (46-41) with 13:36 on the clock. ODU answered with a 9-4 run to tie it up at 50 with just under-11 minutes to go.
The two teams were tied at 52-52 just two minutes later, but that would mark the final tie of the game as Tech broke open the scoring with a 12-4 run to take a 64-56 lead off a three pointer from Young with 3:35 to play. The Hokies led by eight (69-61) going in to the final minute and connected on 4-of-6 from the line in the final seconds to clinch the win.
Tech was strong on the offense, connecting on 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field. The Hokies also outrebounded the Lady Monarchs 43-39, scoring 14 second-chance points.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Thursday, Nov. 14 when the Hokies host Florida. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
