

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech junior forward Uju Ugoka was named to the 2012-13 All-ACC Women’s Basketball Academic Team, as announced by Commissioner John Swofford.
Ugoka is a Sociology major and competed in 17 game for the Hokies this season, averaging 12.5 points and a team-best 8.5 rebounds per game to rank sixth in league games. In addition she was fourth in ACC play with 3.7 offensive rebounds per game.
NC State senior Marissa Kastanek was named the recipient of the fifth annual Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year Award and earns the honor for the second straight season and is the second women’s basketball player to earn repeat honors, joining Duke’s Jasmine Thomas who did so in 2010 and 2011.
A total of 15 student-athletes from eight of the league’s 12 schools were named to the All-ACC Women’s Basketball Academic Team. Duke led for the fifth consecutive year with five selections, followed by NC State with three and Maryland with two. Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami and Virginia Tech each had one representative on the team.
ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. The award is based 60 percent on academic achievement and 40 percent on athletic accomplishment.
To be eligible for consideration for the academic squad, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.ACC
