TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Virginia Tech and No. 22 Florida State were tied just over midway in the second half, but the Seminoles held off the Hokies for the 70-56 win on Sunday afternoon at the Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
“I thought the team played extremely hard and we made progress today even though the final score isn’t what we would have liked,” said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolff. “It was a step forward from the other night. The end score was not indicative of how the game went for 34, 35 minutes. All of our young kids took a step forward today and we just have to get ourselves in the right frame of mind for Clemson on Thursday night.”
Monet Tellier dropped in 18 points and tallied three steals for the Hokies (7-12, 1-7 ACC). Uju Ugoka added 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Alexis Lloyd came off the bench for eight Tech points and three steals on the defensive side.
Leading the Seminoles (17-3, 7-2 ACC) was Chelsea Davis with 19 points. Leonor Rodriguez added 14 and Alexa Deluzio posted 13. Chasity Clayton tallied 12 points. Davis and Deluzio recorded seven rebounds each.
The Seminoles took an early lead in the opening half and led by 11 (18-7) after nine minutes of play. Tech cut it down to single digits, 21-13 off a layup from Ugoka at the 8:47 mark, but FSU answered with a 10-4 run to go on top by 14 (31-17) with just under five minutes to go. Virginia Tech responded with a 13-3 run to close out the half and cut the FSU lead down to four, 34-30 going in to the break.
Tech continued its run into the second half and tied it up (37-37) at 15:51 off a layup from Tellier. The Seminoles reclaimed the lead and went up by four, 37-41 with 14:07 to play. Virginia Tech kept it close and again tied it up (45-45) with 8:58 to play as Lloyd drained a three pointer. FSU responded though with a 25-11 run as the Hokies were unable to answer, closing out the game to secure the win.
The Hokies shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the field, recording their highest shooting mark since recording 41.9 percent against North Carolina on Jan. 6. FSU hit 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field. Tech also connected on 4-of-11 from outside the arc while FSU went 1-of-7. From the free throw line the Seminoles took 27 charity shots, connecting on 19 of them while the Hokies were 2-of-3.
Tech won the rebounding battle, 39-35 and hit 12 second-chance shots. Florida State is averaging 5.8 more rebounds per opponent on the season. The Hokies gave up 23 turnovers to FSU’s 17.
The Hokies will be back on the court when they return home to host Clemson on Thursday, Jan. 31. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
