RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to NC State, 58-39 on Thursday evening in ACC action at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
Monet Tellier tallied a game-high 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Hokies (7-11, 1-6 ACC). Porschia Hadley and Uju Ugoka added six points each.
Myisha Goodwin-Coleman recorded 12 points for the Wolfpack (9-11, 1-7 ACC) while Marissa Kastanek added 10 points. Breezy Williams pulled down seven rebounds.
The Hokies got off to a slow start in the opening half as the Wolfpack took an early 16-0 lead at the 13:13 mark. Hannah Young got the Hokies on the board with a three pointer and Hadley hit back-to-back jumpers for Tech to close the gap to 16-7 with 11 minutes to go. Virginia Tech would get the deficit down to single digits several times over the final minutes, and trailed by nine (24-15) with 4:32 to go. The Pack closed out the half, outscoring Tech 6-3 to take a 30-18 advantage into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Hokies pulled within 10 (33-23) two minutes into the half off a pair of free throws from Tellier. Tech was unable to get the deficit under single digits and trailed 37-27 with 13:42 on the clock. NC State answered with a 10-4 run to increase its lead to 16 (47-31) with 8:38 to go. The Hokies would get no closer than 14 in the remaining minutes as the Pack claimed the 58-39 win.
The Hokies connected on just 1-of-10 from outside the arc while NC State dropped in 7-of-12 (58.3 percent). Virginia Tech shot 26.4 percent (14-of-53) from the field and the Wolfpack knocked down 36.4 percent (20-of-55).
"Disappointed that we haven't improved offensively after we've practiced," said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolf. " We are still having trouble recognizing good shots and the right play."
State held the advantage on the boards, 40-36 and posted 14 second chance points to Tech’s five. The Wolfpack also recorded 19 points off of 19 Tech turnovers. NC State gave up the ball 15 times, resulting in five Hokie points.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Sunday, Jan. 27 at No. 22/21 Florida State. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
