DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team held the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils to 22 points below their season average, but it was not enough as the Hokies fell to the Blue Devils, 58-26, on Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Monet Tellier led the Hokies (7-10, 1-5 ACC) with 10 points and six rebounds, while Alyssa Fenyn followed with six. Uju Ugoka tallied nine rebounds.
Elizabeth Williams led both team with 20 points and eight rebounds. Chelsea Gray added 12 points for the Blue Devils (16-0, 6-0 ACC) while Haley Peters grabbed 10 boards.
“Obviously we need to play better on offense if we’re going to be in a game against a team as good as this," said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolff. "I thought for the first 12 to 15 minutes we competed pretty good and it has happened to us that when it unravels, it totally unravels and that’s what happened to us. The turnovers that led to baskets and some of our younger kids looking shell-shocked. We had growing pains with some of that. Credit them. They’re very good, very talented and they just overwhelmed us for a good stretch of that game.”
The Hokies kept it close early in the opening half, trailing by seven (16-9) with 10:33 on the clock. Tellier drained a three-pointer for the Hokies on the next possession to pull Tech within four midway through the opening period. Duke went on a 13-0 run beginning with 8:44 on the clock to close out the half and take a 29-12 lead into the break.
The Blue Devils kept the momentum in the second half and came out of the intermission on an 11-0 run in the first three minutes of play. The Hokies first bucket came at the 17:20 mark off a jumper from Alexis Lloyd; it was the closest margin of the second frame. Duke never looked back as the Hokies tallied 12 more points, giving the Blue Devils the 58-26 win.
The Hokies shot 26.7 percent (12-45) from the field, and held the Blue Devils to 23-65 (35.4%), over 10 percent under their season average.
Duke’s strong defense forced 27 turnovers, while giving up the ball just 16 times. Tech grabbed 34 rebounds, while the Blue Devils crashed the boards and recorded 49 to add 15 second-chance points.
The Hokies will have a week break before they return to action when they travel to NC State on Thursday, Jan. 24. Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum.
