BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to No. 10 Maryland, 74-45 on Sunday afternoon in ACC competition at Cassell Coliseum.
“We had a whole bunch of different sequences in the second half where we got some good shots and they just didn’t go,” said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolff. “That might have narrowed the gap a little bit. Credit to them because they are obviously a top-10 team. We’re still in the process of finding ourselves. We have to shoot better in games like this.”
Uju Ugoka tallied 12 points for the Hokies (7-9, 1-4 ACC) while Monet Tellier added 11. Nia Evans pulled down seven rebounds. Aerial Wilson and Alyssa Fenyn each handed out three assists.
Alyssa Thomas put up a double-double for Maryland (13-3, 14-1 ACC) with 26 points and 18 rebounds. Thomas also handed out six assists and recorded three blocks. Tianna Hawkins added 14 points while Tierney Pfirman and Katie Rutan had 11 points each.
Maryland got out to the lead in the opening half, but Tech kept it close and trailed by six (15-9) with 10:44 to go. The Terrapins opened up the scoring with a 13-3 run to go on top 28-12 with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Virginia Tech would get no closer than 13 in the final minutes as the Terps took a 37-22 lead in to the break.
The Hokies came out strong in the second half, going on an early run sparked by the Tech defense that forced five consecutive Maryland turnovers. The Hokies cut the Terps’ lead down to 12 (43-71) with 15:15 on the clock. Maryland responded, scoring the next seven to increase its advantage to 20 (51-13) with 11:45 to go. The Terrapins maintained their lead and held the largest, up 29 with 2:58 to go, securing the win.
Virginia Tech shot 27.9 percent (19-of-68) from the field while the Terrapins knocked down 54 percent (27-of-50) from the field. Maryland also hit 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the line to Tech’s 46.7 percent (7-of-15).
The Hokies forced 22 Maryland turnovers while only giving the ball up 11 times, but the Hokies scored just 12 points off turnovers. Tech also grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, hitting just six second-chance points.
Virginia Tech returns to the road to face No. 4 Duke on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
