BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeated Hampton, 55-45, in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
Monet Tellier scored all 14 of her points in the second half to lead the Hokies (7-5). She also pulled down a team-best six rebounds, handed out two assists and picked up a steal. Alyssa Fenyn added 11 points and four rebounds. Lauren Evans had nine points. Hannah Young grabbed four steals.
“I think this was a good win in a hard-fought game,” said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolff. “We had a little adversity to start but I’m very proud of the team for the way they were able to recover. The second half was about as well as we could play. There were great contributions from everybody. I thought Alyssa [Fenyn], Lauren Evans and Hannah [Young] gave us very good minutes. Also Nia [Evans] and Porschia [Hadley] when they came in off the bench had really good plays that helped stretch the lead out, so it was a good win for us.”
Keiara Avant posted a double-double for the Lady Pirates (9-5) with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Nicole Hamilton led all scorers with 17 points.
Both teams got off to a slow start, as Hampton held a 8-4 lead at the 13:38 mark. Virginia Tech tied it up at eight three minutes later off a jumper from Lauren Evans. The Lady Pirates responded with a 9-2 run over the final nine minutes of the opening half to take a 17-10 lead into the break.
Virginia Tech opened up the second half with a 14-2 run take a 24-19 lead with 11:42 on the clock. The Hokies continued the run and took their largest lead of the game, on top by 16 (45-29) with just over two minutes to go. Hampton hit a trio of three pointers late in the game while Tech connected on 10-of-12 from the free throw line in the last minute to set the final score at 55-45.
The Hokies started out slow, shooting just 16 percent (4-of-25) in the opening half, but came back strong in the second to knock down 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the field. The Lady Pirates connected on 17-of-58 (29.3 percent) from the field. Tech shot 75.9 (22-of-29) from the free throw line to Hampton’s 38.5 percent (5-of-13).
Both teams were even on the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds. The Hokies led the turnover battle, giving the ball up just 14 times while forcing 17 turnovers by the Lady Pirates.
The Hokies will return to the court, traveling to in-state ACC rival Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 3 for a 7 p.m. game at John Paul Jones Arena.
