BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeated North Carolina A&T, 58-39 on Friday in non-conference action at Cassell Coliseum.
Uju Ugoka recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Hokies (6-5). Monet Tellier and Alyssa Fenyn posted 12 points each. Tellier also secured seven boards and handed out a game-best five assists.
The Aggies (6-5) were led by JaQuayla Berry with 16 points. Tracy King pulled down six rebounds.
Virginia Tech got out to the early lead in the opening half, going on top 8-4. The Aggies tied it at eight with 11:24 on the clock off a pair of free throws. Tech responded with an 8-0 run sparked by back-to-back three pointers from Tellier and Fenyn to put the Hokies up 16-8 with 8:34 left in the half. Virginia Tech maintained its advantage and took its largest lead of the half up 31-18 going into the break.
The second half continued much as the first as the Hokies extended their advantage to 16 (39-23) points with 15:58 on the clock off a layup from Tellier. The Aggies cut the lead down to 12 (29-27) off a pair of free throws from Berry at 14:30. That is as close as N.C. A&T would come as Tech took its largest lead of the game with 3:10 remaining, going on top by 23 with a score of 58-35. The Aggies scored the last four points of the game to set the final score at 58-39.
Virginia Tech shot 43.3 percent (26-of-50) from the field and went 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from outside the arc. The Aggies hit 24.4 percent (11-of-45) from the field and connected on 20 (2-of-10) percent from three-point range. Tech shot just two free throws with Nia Evans making both. N.C. A&T shot 65.2 percent from the line on 15-of-23.
The Hokies held a 48-26 advantage on the boards and recorded 19 second-chance points to the Aggies’ four. Virginia Tech knocked down 22 points in the paint to A&T’s 12.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Sunday, Dec. 30, hosting Hampton in a 2 p.m. game at Cassell Coliseum.
