RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to Richmond, 65-51 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Robins Center in Richmond, Va.
“I thought the girls showed good fight coming back to start the second half,” said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolff. “We could just never really get over the hump. We were able to cut it to eight and nine, but we could never really get it lower than that. We got fatigued a little bit, we were in foul trouble and they just made more plays than we did over the course of the game.”
Monet Tellier led all scorers with 20 points for the Hokies (4-3). Freshman Lauren Evans had 12 points and Alyssa Fenyn added nine for Tech. Tellier and freshman Alex Kiss-Rusk each grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
Leading the Spiders (6-4) was Rachael Bilney with 16 points. Becca Wann added 15 points, nine rebounds and handed out five assists.
The Hokies got out to an early lead in the opening half, going up 12-6 off back-to-back baskets from Tellier and a jumper from Fenyn at 15:44. Richmond responded with a 26-4 run fueled by five three pointers to take a 32-16 advantage with 7:24 remaining in the half. The Spiders took their largest lead up 17 (34-17) at the 5:30 mark. Richmond led 41-26 with 34 seconds to go, but Fenyn knocked down a three as time ran off the clock to cut the gap to 12 at the break.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the second half with the first point coming from a Fenyn free throw two minutes in. The Hokies held the Spiders to a five minute drought and cut the Richmond lead to single digits several times, closing to within eight (43-35) at the 13:42 mark off a Tellier layup. Tech kept it in single digits and trailed 50-41 with just under eight minutes to go, but Richmond extended its lead back to 13 (56-43) with 6:03 left. The Hokies again pulled within nine (60-51) with 3:15 on the clock but the Spiders held on to the lead to secure the win.
Virginia Tech shot 40.9 percent (18-of-44) from the field and was 1-of-3 from outside the arc. The Hokies went 14-of-21 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line. Richmond shot 46.8 (22-of-47) from the field, including 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from three point range. The Spiders hit an 85.7 percent (12-of-14) clip from the line.
The Hokies and Spiders grabbed 27 and 26 rebounds, respectively. Tech forced 18 Richmond turnovers while turning the ball over 17 times.
Virginia Tech will return to the court when the Hokies host No. 10 Penn State on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
