BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team bounced back strong in its second game of the season, defeating Appalachian State 71-68 on Wednesday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Alyssa Fenyn scored 13 points to lead four Hokies (1-1) in double-digits. Fenyn also handed out a game-high nine assists to set a new career-high. Monet Tellier added 12 points with six assists and a pair of steals. Freshman Taijah Campbell dropped in 11 points, pulled down eight rebounds and recorded a pair of blocks for the second straight game. Porschia Hadley rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Anna Freeman led Appalachian State (1-1) with 36 points to set a Cassell Coliseum women’s record. Freeman connected on six three pointers to tie the coliseum record set by an opposing player. Courtney Freeman added 11 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists.
Virginia Tech got out to the early lead, going up 15-9 midway through the half. The Mountaineers responded with a 12-0 run to go on top 21-15 with 6:42 to go in the half. Appalachian State took its largest lead up eight (28-20) with 2:32 on the clock. A three pointer from Tellier sparked an 8-3 Virginia Tech run that ended on a trey from Lloyd with 12 seconds to go, sending the Hokies into the break trailing 31-28.
Coming out of the intermission, the Mountaineers went up by six off a three from Anna Freeman, but Tellier connected on back-to-back threes for the Hokies to tie the game at 34 after a minute and half of play. Virginia Tech continued its run, to take a seven point, 43-36 lead with just under 15 minutes to go.
The Hokies maintained their advantage and were up 61-54 at the 5:53 mark, but ASU rallied with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 63 with just over three minutes to go. The two teams traded baskets and were tied at 68 with 42 seconds remaining. A jumper from Hadley gave the Hokies the go ahead basket with 19 seconds on the clock. With seven seconds to go, Appalachian State took the ball down the court and missed the tying layup. Tellier sunk a free throw as two seconds showed on the clock to help secure the win for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech knocked down 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the field and hit 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from outside the arc. The nine three pointers marks the first time the Hokies have connected on nine treys in a game since the 2008-09 season. Tech also hit 75 percent (6-of-8) from the free throw line. Appalachian State went 20-of-44 from the field (45.5 percent) and connected on 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from three-point range. The Mountaineers went 20-of-23 (87 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Hokies held a 31-25 advantage on the boards and hit 13 second-chance points. Both teams recorded 14 turnovers, but App State held the 26-17 advantage in points off turnovers. Virginia Tech’s bench came up big, tallying 23 points to ASU’s eight.
Virginia Tech will return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 18, as the Hokies take to the road for the first time this season, traveling to East Lansing, Mich., to face Michigan State. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Breslin Center.
