CLEMSON, S.C. – Behind a career-high 24 points from Aerial Wilson, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team claimed a 55-33 decision over ACC foe Clemson on Monday night at Littlejohn Coliseum in the conference opener for both teams.
“As good of start to a basketball game as I’ve ever been involved in,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “The kids deserve a world of credit to their approach to our first ACC game. Aerial Wilson had her best game as a Hokie and our team defense was as good as we could have hoped for.”
Tech’s (5-9, 1-0 ACC) Wilson also recorded four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Monet Tellier added 12 points and six rebounds, while Latorri Hines-Allen knocked down eight points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Porschia Hadley also dropped in eight points for the Hokies.
The Lady Tigers (4-8, 0-1 ACC) were led by Natiece Ford and Quinyotta Pettaway with eight points each. Chelsea Lindsay pulled down seven rebounds.
The Hokies came out strong with a 17-0 run in the opening seven minutes. In the first 12:51 of the game Tech held Clemson to 1-of-15 from the field and forced nine turnovers, putting the Hokies up 32-3 with just over seven minutes to go in the half. Clemson responded, holding Tech to just a pair of free throws the rest of the half while going on an 11-0 run to cut into the lead. Virginia Tech took a 34-14 advantage into the break.
Clemson looked to make a run coming out of the intermission, outscoring the Hokies 10-6 in the opening minutes to pull within 16 (40-24), but that is as close as the Lady Tigers would get in the second half. Tech answered with a 9-0 run and never looked back, as the Hokies rolled to a 55-33 win.
The Hokies shot 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field while the Lady Tigers connected on 20.5 percent (9-of-44). Virginia Tech was strong inside, recording 26 points in the paint to Clemson’s eight.
Clemson held a 37-32 advantage on rebounds. Tech forced 26 turnovers resulting in 19 points for the Hokies. The Tech defense also held the Lady Tigers to a school-record low 33 points.
Tech will remain on the road, traveling to Boston College Thursday, Jan. 2. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Chesnut Hill, Mass.
