BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior Utahya Drye’s 14 points led seven Hokies who scored at least eight points, as the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team cruised to a 74-44 victory over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
The win, which improved Tech’s record to 10-4 on the season, was the Hokies’ third victory this season by at least 30 points. They’ve now won three straight heading into Thursday’s ACC opener at Wake Forest. UMBC dropped to 6-7 with the loss.
“Coach stresses getting off to a good start, so we tried to do that in the first half and it pretty much carried us throughout the whole game,” said freshman Alyssa Fenyn, who finished second on the team with 12 points. “She’s also constantly on us about getting off to a good start in the first five minutes of the second half.”
The Hokies did both in this one, as they hit 12 of their first 17 shots (70.6 percent) to jump out to a 13-point lead. Tech eventually held a 20-point halftime bulge and then opened the second half on a 9-2 run to build 50-28 advantage.
Though the Hokies’ shooting cooled down in the second half, they kept up the defensive pressure and forced the Retrievers into a field-goal drought of 10:13, building a game-high lead of 32 points in the process.
Joining Drye (who added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season) and Fenyn in the scoring column were Lakeisha Logan with nine points, and Porschia Hadley, Nikki Davis, Lindsay Biggs and Brittany Gordon, all with eight points each. Davis added career highs and nine rebounds and eight assists to flirt with a triple-double.
Logan hit three of the Hokies’ season-high seven 3-pointers. Tech also set a season high in team rebounds (55) and rebounding margin (+26).
Michelle Kurowski paced UMBC with 13 points.
Tip off for Thursday’s game at Wake Forest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
