Women's Basketball: Behind The Scenes

“The basketball court for me, during a game, is the most peaceful place I can imagine. On the basketball court, I worry about nothing. When I'm out there, no one can bother me...”
- Michael Jordan

Cassell Coliseum is our stage. It is the place where my teammates and I come together as a program and show off what we are made of for our loyal fans. The gym is full of so much history and spirit. It has been said that Cassell is one of the toughest gyms to play in; yet, there is something so special about that arena that cannot be matched.

For freshman Alex Kiss-Rusk, her favorite part of playing in Cassell is the great competitive atmosphere she feels when she steps out on that court. She said, “The stands are so steep and seem to go on forever.” You can truly feel the support all around you. Alex’s proudest moment as a Hokie thus far in Cassell was two nights ago when we took down Wisconsin (47-38) in the Big 10-ACC Challenge. Alex finally scored her first collegiate points as a Hokie! Her mom was even there to cheer her on! I know Alex was so happy her mom got to see her make her first big shot!

Being a Hokie is so special because of the family that comes along with the title. And Cassell is the place where our Hokie family all comes together. Cassell Coliseum has some of the most dedicated fans in the country. There are fans that have been coming to women’s and men's basketball games for over 32 years now! We are so lucky to be a part of this Hokie Nation!

And for me, Cassell feels like home. As a third-generation Hokie, I know how special it is to be a part of this community. I am so blessed to be able to share the Hokie spirit with my parents, sister and grandfather. And let’s be honest, there is no other feeling like hearing “Enter Sandman” at the beginning of the game. I am getting chills just thinking about it!

To other teams, a home game is just another time to play. But for us, that home game is so much more special. Cassell’s spirit is much to be appreciated now and forever. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the season!
