Virginia Tech Volleyball earns AVCA academic award

Hokies are one of six schools from the ACC

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Monday that the Virginia Tech volleyball program earned Team Academic Honors for the 2016-17 season.

"I am extremely proud of our team’s dedication in the classroom and how they represent our athletic department and Virginia Tech," Tech head coach Jill Wilson said. "They challenge themselves with some very difficult majors and each have outstanding futures as leaders in their fields.”

The AVCA honored a record 822 teams this year from both the high school and college ranks. The award is given to teams that hold an average 3.30 cumulative team GPA during the academic year on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.

The Hokies finished the academic year with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.31.

A total of 145 Division I schools were honored and Tech is one of six ACC schools to make the list, joining Clemson, Louisville, NC State, Notre Dame and Virginia.

Tech opens the 2017 season on the road against Idaho State, South Dakota State and UW-Milwaukee in a tournament on Aug. 25-26. The Hokies return 13 letterwinners and are set to add five newcomers.
