Virginia Tech volleyball releases 2017 schedule

BLACKSBURG – First-year head coach Jill Lytle Wilson has announced the Virginia Tech volleyball program’s 2017 schedule, which features a home tournament and 10 ACC matches at Cassell Coliseum.

Wilson, the fifth head coach in the 40-year history of the program, comes to Blacksburg after helping lead LSU to six NCAA Tournaments in 10 seasons as an assistant.

The non-conference slate features road tournaments at Milwaukee, Arkansas State and Marshall. The Hokies will go up against SMU, last year’s champion of the American Athletic Conference, on September 2 in Jonesboro, Arkansas before taking on Maryland on September 9 in Huntington, West Virginia. The Terrapins and the Hokies last played each other on November 29, 2013 and the Hokies lead the all-time series, 11-10.

Tech opens the home slate with the Hokie Invitational, sponsored by the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Christiansburg, from September 15-16. The Hokies bump off conference play the following weekend on the road before facing Louisville on October 6 and Notre Dame on October 8 at Cassell Coliseum.

Tech returns multiple key pieces from last year’s squad including starters Carol Raffety at libero, setter Rhegan Mitchell and right side hitter Jaila Tolbert. Rising seniors Cara Cunningham, who had a career-year last season, and Stacey Christy will be look to hold down the middle for the Hokies.
