BLACKSBURG – Riding a three-match win streak heading into the final two matches of the season, the Virginia Tech volleyball team will take on Pitt on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. before traveling to Charlottesville to face Virginia at 7 p.m. on Friday. Both matches will be steamed on WatchESPN via ACC Network Extra.
The Hokies (12-17, 7-11 ACC) have won three in a row and four of their last five matches with three of the victories coming on the road. Last weekend, the Hokies took two matches from Boston College (3-0) and Syracuse (3-1). The Eagles were the fifth ACC foe that Tech has swept this season.
Since the return of starting setter Rhegan Mitchell from injury, the Hokies have gone 4-2 and are hitting .241 as a team. Senior Amanda McKinzie has also played at a higher level as she continues to march towards 1,000 career kills. McKinzie currently sits at 983 career kills and could become one of just seven players in program history to have collected 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills in a career.
Freshman Carol Raffety is also on pace to break the freshman digs record held by Amanda Cloyd (478, 2004) as she’s now 23 away from matching the program mark. Tech has also seen consistent play from sophomore Kelly Esch at RS and junior D/S Rhana Mitchell in spot rotations. Over the last five matches, Esch is averaging 1.53 kills per set and Mitchell is averaging 1.94 digs per set.
LAST TIME VS. PITT
In what was a tough, physical contest on both sides, a staunch defensive effort from the Virginia Tech volleyball team came up just short as Pitt defeated the Hokies, 3-1 (25-12, 18-25, 29-27, 25-16), on Virginia Tech Carillion Court on Sept. 29. Tech rejected 10 shots to Pitt’s six and held the Panthers to a .209 attack percentage.
LAST TIME VS. VIRGINIA
The Virginia Tech volleyball team saw five different players post five or more kills and held in-state foe Virginia to a .190 attack percentage as the Hokies topped the Cavaliers, 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-21), in front of 1,741 at Virginia Tech Carilion Court on Sept. 20.
