BLACKSBURG – Despite neutralizing Notre Dame’s outside hitters for the entire match and a tremendous all-around effort from senior Amanda McKinzie, the Virginia Tech volleyball team could not get past the Irish in a 3-0 loss (25-20, 25-15, 25-18) at Virginia Tech Carilion Court on Sunday afternoon.
McKinzie led the Hokies (8-13, 3-7 ACC) with 16 kills with a .262 hitting percentage and 14 digs. Freshman Carol Raffety returned to the back row and posted a team-high 18 digs. The Irish (18-4, 9-1 ACC) were out-dug by the Hokies, 52-48.
Notre Dame led 9-3 early in the first set but Tech rattled off three-consecutive points on a kill from junior Stacey Christy and two kills from McKinzie that made it 9-6. The Hokies continued to hang tough and later cut its deficit to one, 17-16, after McKinzie’s seventh kill of the game. Notre Dame then called a timeout and went on a 3-0 run, giving themselves enough of a cushion that put the set out of reach.
After falling in the second frame, the Hokies again battled in the third set where they fell behind early but cut its deficit to three, 10-7. It wouldn’t be enough though as Notre Dame led wire-to-wire to close out the match.
Tech will wrap up a four-match homestand this week against No. 8 North Carolina at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, and NC State on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m.
