CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Junior Cara Cunningham hit a team-best .455 with three digs, two blocks and a service ace in the Virginia Tech volleyball team’s 3-0 loss (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) to Miami on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Lindsey Owens led Tech with eight kills and two service aces and freshman Carol Raffety chipped in with five kills and 12 digs. The loss to the Hurricanes (8-12, 2-6 ACC) marked the end of a rigorous four-match road trip for the Hokies (8-11, 3-5 ACC).

In the first set, the Hokies stayed close with Miami and took an 18-17 lead after an attack error. Despite an error and a kill from Owens that gave Tech its 20th point, the Hokies could not overcome late rally as the ‘Canes took the first 25-20.

After falling in the second set, 25-19, Raffety moved back to libero and junior Stacey Christy started the third set. Sophomore Jaila Tolbert tied the score at 6-6 with a kill and, after an error and an ace from senior Amanda McKinzie, Tech took an early 8-6 lead. Another kill from Tolbert made it 16-14 in favor of the Hokies but it wasn’t enough as a late charge helped Miami clinch the set and the match, 3-0.

The Hokies return to Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum on Friday, Oct. 21, for a 7 p.m. match against Louisville.
