DURHAM, N.C. -- Despite taking the first set and posting a first set hitting percentage of .326, the second-highest clip allowed by Duke in a first set this season, the Virginia Tech volleyball team could not sustain its momentum as the Hokies fell to the Blue Devils, 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-13), on Sunday afternoon.

Tech (8-9, 3-3 ACC) was led by senior Lindsey Owens who tallied eighth double-double of the season with a 15 kill and 13 dig performance. Junior Cara Cunningham hit .500 with five blocks and an ace. The Blue Devils (11-5, 5-1 ACC), who boast one of the top two defenses in the conference, allowed the Hokies to hit .326 and were held to a .204 attack percentage in the first frame.

With the score tied at 6-6 early in the first, senior Amanda McKinzie broke the tie with a kill and gave Tech its first lead of the match at 7-6. The Hokies extended their advantage to 14-10, forcing Duke to call a timeout, but the Devils would make their move and take a 19-16 lead later in the game.

Trailing 21-19, the Hokies rattled off four-straight points that featured two kills from Owens and a kill from McKinzie that gave Tech a 22-21 lead. Duke would knot up the score one more time at 23-23 but kills from Owens and sophomore Jaila Tolbert clinched the first set for the Hokies, 25-23.

After Tech dropped the second game, Duke cruised to a 25-11 win in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match before clinching in the fourth.

The Hokies four-match road trip continues next weekend at Florida State on Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. before traveling to Miami for a 1 p.m. match on Oct. 16.
