WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Senior Lindsey Owens matched her season-high with 22 kills and had nine digs and four blocks as the Virginia Tech volleyball team dispatched Wake Forest, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 31-29), for its third sweep of an ACC opponent this season.

The Hokies (8-8, 3-2 ACC) hit .269 as a team and held the Demon Deacons (6-10, 2-3 ACC) to a .147 attack percentage. Senior Amanda McKinzie surpassed the 1,000-career dig threshold in the second set and finished with 14 on the evening.

In the first set, back-to-back aces from junior Cara Cunningham gave Tech a 12-9 lead and forced the Demon Deacons to call a timeout. Tech’s hot start was due to sophomore Briana Lanktree, who started the match with four kills on five attempts off the bench. Her play propelled the Hokies to a convincing 25-19 first set win.

Tech jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second but the Deacs roared back to tie the score at 7-7. The Hokies responded with three-consecutive points to regain the lead, 10-7, thanks to three Deacon errors and a kill from sophomore Jaila Tolbert. Tech would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the set as three kills and 10 digs from McKinzie helped give the Hokies a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Wake fought for hard to get the match to a fourth set as both teams tied the score 20 times and seven leads were exchanged in the third game. With the Hokies facing set point, 24-22, an attack error and a kill from Lanktree knotted up the score at 24-24. The final tie score of the match came at 29-29 and the Hokie defense forced back-to-back Wake errors that clinched a wild deciding set for Tech.

Tech will next travel to Durham for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday against Duke.
