BLACKSBURG – Senior Amanda McKinzie posted 10 kills, 14 digs and four aces and sophomore Kelly Esch hit .500 (6 for 12) with three blocks in her first career start as the Virginia Tech volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over Clemson in the Hokies ACC opener on Friday evening.

The Hokies (6-6) out-hit (.267-.128) and out-dug (49-39) the Tigers in a convincing defensive effort. For McKinzie it was her fifth double-double of the season.

After Clemson cut its deficit in the first set to one, 17-16, a kill from senior Lindsey Owens halted the Tigers run to make it 18-16. Tech then used a 3-0 run to go up 21-16 and Clemson did not get any closer as the Hokies took the first, 25-21.

The Tigers jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the second but the Hokies fought back and evened up the score at 15-15 after an error and a kill from junior Mandy Powers. Two kills from Owens and a kill from junior Cara Cunningham opened up the lead the 19-16 en route to a 25-20 second set for the Hokies.

The third frame was all Tech as McKinzie tallied six of her team-high 10 kills in the deciding frame to lead the Hokies to the win.
