BLACKSBURG –Double-doubles from seniors Amanda McKinzie and Lindsey Owens and junior Mandy Powers propelled the Virginia Tech volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Radford on Virginia Tech Carillion Court on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Carol Raffety was one dig shy of matching her career-best as she finished with 27 digs and sophomore Jaila Tolbert had a team-best 12 kills for the Hokies (5-5). The Tech defense forced the Highlanders (9-3) into to make multiple errors and allowed its crosstown foe to hit only .117 for the match.
After a kill by junior Stacey Christy that score tied at 10-10 in the first set, the Hokies jumped out in front to make it 14-10. Tech would not lose its lead in the first as another kill from Christy clinched the game and gave her team an early 1-0 lead in the match.
The Hokies held set point, 24-22, in the second set but Radford cut the deficit to one off a kill. It wasn’t enough though as sophomore Briana Lanktree set up a dime to McKinzie for the kill, giving Tech a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room.
Radford took the third frame, 25-16, but Tech did not falter and countered with a third set victory. Consecutive kills from Owens and McKinzie forced the Highlanders to call timeout with the Hokies leading 12-6 but the Hokies later extended its lead to eight, 19-8. Radford made a run by cutting its deficit to two, 22-20, but back-to-back kills from Christy made it a 24-20 game and Lanktree clinched match with her seventh kill.
Tech will conclude the Hokie Invitational this evening at 8 p.m. against Ohio. The match will be streamed live on WatchESPN via Hokie Vision LIVE.
