NASHVILLE -- Senior Amanda McKinzie posted a team-high 11 kills and junior Cara Cunningham tallied five kills a four blocks as the Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to two-time defending Atlantic Sun champions Lipscomb, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.
The Hokies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game and after an ace from Owens Lipscomb was forced to call a timeout trailing 7-2. Tech led wire-to-wire until the Bisons took its first lead of the set at 22-21. Their first lead of the game was part of a 6-0 run that gave them the set, 25-21.
Before dropping the final set, back-to-back kills from McKinzie evened the score at 7-7 and the senior later matched the score again 15-15 in the second set. The Hokies would close the gap to one at 22-21 but couldn’t get over the hump as the Bisons took a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Tech returns to campus on Friday, Sept. 16, where they will face Radford at 3 p.m. and Ohio 8 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
- Cunningham has now turned in four or more blocks in three-consecutive games. She tallied 21 blocks over the three matches at the Lipscomb Invitational.
- Freshman Gaby Senties, junior Mandy Powers and freshman Abby McKinzie each saw time at setter as the Hokies to continue try and fill in for the injured Rhegan Mitchell.
- Tech started two freshmen against the Lady Bison with Senties at setter and Raffety at libero.
- Senties’ 10 assists marked her second double-digit assist match of the season.
- Sophomore Kelly Esch saw the floor in the first set and started the second game at rightside for her first extended playing time of the season.
- Senior Lindsey Owens finished with eight kills and two blocks, both solo, one shy of tying her season-high.
