BAYAMON, Puerto Rico -- Despite holding late leads in the first and second sets, No. 14 Texas A&M proved to be too much for the Virginia Tech volleyball team as the Hokies dropped a 3-0 decision to the Aggies on Saturday evening in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Facing its toughest competition of the season, Tech (4-2) went 1-2 over three matches in the Puerto Clasico. Senior Lindsey Owens posted a team-best 13 kills against the Aggies and sophomore Jaila Tolbert hit .500 (9-for-16) to lead the Hokies.

Sophomore Briana Lanktree gave the Hokies its first lead of the match in the first set, 16-15, and they extended their advantage to 19-17 after consecutive kills from Owens and junior Stacey Christy.

After Texas A&M called a timeout, the Aggies chipped away at the deficit but were still on the ropes with the score tied at 25-25. Lanktree tied the score again with a kill that made it 26-26 but it wasn’t enough as A&M tallied two more points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, Tech used a 3-0 run trailing 20-14 to cut its deficit to three, 20-17. An A&M attack error and two kills from Owens tied the score at 21-21 but the Aggies buckled down to take the second, 25-23, before claiming the third set to complete the sweep.

MATCH NOTES

  • Tolbert turned in her second .500-plus attacking percentage performance of the season after hitting .500 against the Aggies.
  • Christy continues her strong performance in non-conference play as the junior has hit .300 or better in all but one match this season.
  • While the numbers do not jump off the page, Lanktree came off the bench and provided three key kills including two in the second set that kept Tech close.
  • The Hokies out-served the Aggies, 5-2, but were out-blocked, 7-2.
