BAYAMON, Puerto Rico -- For the second-consecutive night, the Virginia Tech volleyball team went to five sets. But unlike last night’s 3-2 heartbreaking loss to Alabama, the Hokies would not be fooled again.
Junior Cara Cunningham turned in a career night with a .600 attacking percentage, four aces and five blocks and senior Amanda McKinzie tallied eighteen kills and two aces in the Hokies 3-2 victory over Temple on Friday evening in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
In the fifth set, the Hokies (3-1) jumped out to an early lead after a kill from McKinzie and a Temple error made it 5-2. The Owls evened up the score before holding match point with a 14-13 lead.
With its backs against the wall, junior Stacey Christy picked up a kill off a slide and McKinzie converted her first service ace of the evening to put Tech back in front, 15-14. After Temple called a timeout, McKinzie’s serve again landed in-bounds to give the Hokies the victory.
Tech forced a deciding set after it clinched the fourth set, 25-18, behind a 6-3 run that was capped off by a kill from Cunningham.
MATCH NOTES
- In the third set, senior Lindsey Owens tallied her 11th dig of the evening, pushing her over the 1,000 dig mark for her career.
- Owens is now one of six players in program history, and the first since Annie Spicer in 2004, to collect 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career at Tech.
- Cunningham set career-high with nine kills, a .600 attack percentage and four aces in the win.
- McKinzie’s two service aces came at the most critical moment for the Hokies with the score tied at 14-14. McKinzie tallied the 15th and 16 points in the fifth set.
- Freshman defensive specialist Abby McKinzie picked up her first career start and posted a kill and 11 digs.
- Despite being out-blocked, 14.5-8, the Hokies picked up eight key points in service to Temple’s four.
- Sophomore Alex Toben came on the third set for her first action of 2016.
