BLACKSBURG – Senior outside hitter Lindsey Owens had 13 kills and 16 digs for her second double-double in as many games as the Virginia Tech volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory (26-24, 25-18, 25-18) over Siena in its first of two matches on Saturday.

Junior Ashley Battle hit .385 to go along with a team-best five blocks. Owens, junior Cara Cunningham and sophomore Jaila Tolbert each pitched in with three swats each to help out-block the Saints.

The Hokes toughest challenge of the day was the first set. With the score tied at 10-10, Tech used a 4-1 run that created separation and forced Siena to call a timeout. With Tech holding set point, 24-20, the Saints rattled off four-consecutive points to knot up the score before a kill from senior Amanda McKinzie and a service ace from Cunningham clinched the set and gave the Hokies a 1-0 advantage.

Tech jumped out to an 11-6 lead and would not relinquish it in the second set en route to a 25-18 win. The story was the same in the third, as was the set score, 25-18, where the score was tied only once and the Hokies led wire-to-wire.

MATCH NOTES

• Sophomore setter Rhegan Mitchell seems to have picked up where she left off last season. The Peachtree City, Georgia native surpassed the 1,000 career assist plateau after tallying 37 dimes in the win over Siena.
• Owens currently has 967 career digs and is on pace to reach 1,000 for her career. When she does, she will become only the sixth player in program history, and the first since Annie Spicer who accomplished the feat back in 2001, to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career at Tech.
• Freshmen Carol Raffety and Abby McKinzie have found spots in head Chris Riley’s rotations here in the early going. Raffety picked up the start at libero for the second-straight match and McKinzie has shown promise as a defensive specialist with an effective serve.
• The Hokies are now on a six-game winning streak dating back to last season, which began with a 3-1 win over Syracuse on Nov. 20.
• Despite a small sample size, Tech has out-blocked (20-13) and out-hit (.241-.164) their opponent’s in both of matches this season.

UP NEXT

The Hokies will next face UMBC in the finale of the Virginia Tech/Radford Invitational on the Virginia Tech Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum at 7 p.m.
