BLACKSBURG -- The American Vollyeball Coaches Association (AVCA) has recognized the Virginia Tech volleyball program’s success in the classroom by honoring the Hokies with a 2015-16 Team Academic Award, the organization announced on Monday.
The Hokies finished the academic year with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.35, the fifth-highest GPA of all Tech athletic programs. Also highlighting last season’s academic success was senior outside hitter and biology major Lindsey Owens being named a recipient of the Skelton Award, Virginia Tech Athletics’ highest academic honor for a student-athlete.
Tech was one of five teams in the ACC to receive the award.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Tech opens the 2016 season with Appalachian Sate in the Virginia Tech/Radford Invitational at Cassell Coliseum. For ticket information, call (540) 231-6731.
