VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Tech volleyball team opened spring competition in Virginia Beach on Saturday, winning every set in each of the four matches.
The Hokies defeated George Mason, Liberty, Albany, and ACC rival Virginia, all in straight sets.
“It was great to go undefeated all weekend," associate head coach Shelbylynn Adair said. "UVA is always a battle for us and it was a battle this weekend too. We beat them in a close battle in the first set and took over in the second which was nice. We did a really good job of playing well enough to win.”
Tech held its four opponents to a combined .004 attack percentage, anchored by Lindsey Owens as libero.
“Lindsey [Owens] defended really well for us as libero," Adair said. "Our defense as a whole as fantastic. We improved each set. We started out a little slow but improved each set which has been our focus for the spring.”
Ashley Battle, Katie Krueger, and Briana Lanktree paved the way for Tech’s offense, each attacking above .260 throughout each match. Lanktree went a perfect 6-for-7 against UVA to highlight the weekend.
“Katie [Krueger] hit really well throughout each of the four matches," Adair said. "Ashley [Battle] has worked really hard and made big strides this season. Briana [Lanktree] did really well in the front row and back row. It was nice for her to get a lot of playing time this weekend. It was exciting to see her step up in that role as an outside hitter.”
Tech will compete in two more Saturday tournaments in April. The Hokies will face James Madison, Liberty, and two ACC teams, Duke and North Carolina on April 9 in Richmond. Tech wraps up spring ball at UNC on April 16, facing ACC foes Duke, NC State, and host Carolina.
