GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rhegan Mitchell and Lindsey Owens were named to the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference’s All-Academic volleyball team, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Mitchell and Owens were two of 32 student-athletes who garnered the award.
“We’re really proud of Lindsey [Owens] and Rhegan [Mitchell] on this accomplishment,” head coach Chris Riley said. “Day in and day out, they exemplify the highest level of a student athlete here at Virginia Tech.”
Owens, a junior majoring in biology, is a two-time honoree to the All-ACC Academic team. The outside hitter earned a 3.93 GPA in the fall with a cumulative GPA of 3.86. Owens led the team with 400 kills while totaling 343 digs to collect 16 double-doubles throughout the season.
Mitchell, a redshirt freshman majoring in human nutrition, foods and exercise, received her first All-ACC Academic team honors after earning a 3.40 GPA this fall. The setter totaled 916 assists, averaging 7.51 assists per set to rank 10th in the ACC while also earning nine double-doubles in 2015.
Virginia Tech was one of five schools with two honorees while all 15 ACC schools are represented on this year’s All-ACC Academic Team. Louisville led with five members followed by Duke with four. Florida State and Miami have three representatives. North Carolina, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest have two members, while Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, NC State, Notre Dame and Virginia all have one student-athlete apiece.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team
