HARRISONBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech volleyball players Lindsey Owens and Ashley Battle were named to the 2015 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Volleyball first and second teams, respectively as released by VaSID on Friday.
Owens continues to earn first team honors for the second consecutive season.
“Lindsey [Owens] is a terrific six rotation player and has lead out team for three seasons,” head coach Chris Riley said. “Lindsey makes everyone around her better.”
The all-ACC second team selection led the Hokies with 400 kills to average 3.33 kills per set. The junior recorded her 1,000th career kill this season on Oct. 30 against Miami. She has posted 16 double-doubles with 22 double-figure kill matches. Owens has collected 343 digs this season, setting a career single-match high of 24 at Duke. Additionally, the Orlando, Florida native come in with 63 total blocks and 31 aces in 2015.
Battle garnered her first VaSID honors as a second-team honoree.
“Ashley [Battle] has become a force at the net this season leading us in blocks and attack percentage,” Riley said. “Ashley has the ability to completely take over a match both offensively and defensively and she continues to improve.”
Battle started all 32 matches, leading the squad in both hitting percentage and blocks. The Apex, North Carolina native finished the season with 143 total blocks to place eighth in Tech’s single-season records. The redshirt sophomore averaged 1.17 blocks per set with an attack percentage of .330 to rank 10th in the Atlantic Coast Conference in both categories. She posted a career-high 13 total blocks at Pittsburgh to rank second in Tech history in individual match blocks. Battle attacked at or above a .400 rate in 12 matches throughout the 2015 campaign.
James Madison’s Janey Goodman earned the Player of the Year honor while her coach Lauren Steinbrecher was named Coach of the Year. Virginia’s Anna Walsh garnered the Rookie of the Year title and her teammate picked up three first team honors.
