BLACKSBURG, Va. – Led by the Lindsey Owens-Amanda McKinzie duo, the Virginia Tech volleyball team clinched a 3-1 upset over Syracuse on Friday night in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies up their record to 16-13, 7-10 in conference play while the Orange dips to 20-8 overall, 11-6 in the ACC.

Both Owens and McKinzie notched a double-double to lift the Hokies through their second frame setback to the four-set victory. Rhegan Mitchell quarterbacked the team registering the final double-double with 31 assists and 11 digs to pace the squad through the two multiple match point frames.

Owens attacked at a team-best .405 rate, totaling 19 kills with 10 digs. McKinzie added another 16 while Kennedy Bryan rounded out the pack with 11. The blocking pait of Cara Cunningham and Jaila Tolbert combined for six blocks and nine kills throughout the night. Kenedy McGrath steadied Tech’s defense, collecting 21 digs – a mere nine away from the 1,000 career dig mark.

Syracuse’s Silvi Uattara and Nicolette Serratore paced the Orange with a double-double a piece. Despite Uattara’s 17 kills and Serratore’s 14, the Hokies held the Orange to a .253 rate, ultimately securing the victory.

The Hokies started off strong in the opening set, attacking at a .414 rate over the Orange's .235. Tech fell behind early but was able to tie up the frame at 17-17. The squads fought through eight tie scores and seven lead changes until the Hokies secured the 26-24 victory.

Despite Owen's three kills in the second frame, the Hokies could not convert to take the set. McKinzie's four digs grounded Tech's defense but Syracuse came up with the 25-15 decision.

The Hokies and Orange fought to the end in the third frame with 20 tie scores and nine lead changes. However, Bryan’s six kills and Owen’s .556 attack led Tech to the 30-28 victory.

The Hokies maintained their momentum in the final set, holding on to a two-point lead throughout a majority of the frame. Syracuse was able to come back forcing five tie scores but only two lead changes. Owen’s and McKinzie’s six kills apiece secured the final 25-22 win for the Hokies.

Tech returns to Cassell Coliseum on Sunday at 1 p.m. to serve as host to Boston College.
