BLACKSBURG – Following their first program win at Notre Dame and an AVCA top-25 setback at Louisville, the Hokies travel to NC State and No. 25 North Carolina to conclude their two-week road trip this weekend in winning fashion. Virginia Tech faces NC State Friday at 7:30 p.m. followed by North Carolina Saturday at the same time.
The Hokies travel with a 15-11 overall record, 6-8 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack serves as host Friday with a 14-12 mark, 3-11 in the ACC while the Tar Heels enter the weekend with a 15-8 record, second in conference with a 12-2 mark.
Kenedy McGrath inches closer to the Virginia Tech record books after recording 29 digs at Notre Dame. McGrath now totals 945 digs in her Hokie career – 55 shy of the 1,000 dig mark.
Lindsey Owens surpassed the 1,000 kill mark and inches closer to the 10th-spot in the Hokie records after slugging her 1,043rd kill last weekend.
Amanda McKinzie, Rhegan Mitchell, and Owens all recorded double-doubles last weekend, upping the squad’s total to 34 this season.
Scouting the Wolfpack:
NC State returns to Raleigh this weekend after suffering two four-set decisions at Boston College and Syracuse. The Wolfpack’s most recent victory was at 3-2 win at home against Notre Dame on Oct. 30. Four Wolfpack players have registered over 232 kills this season to balance the offense: Julia Brown with 233, Perry Ramsey with 240, Blayke Hranicka with 250, and Kaitlyn Kearney with 267.
Scouting the Tar Heels:
Currently sharing the second spot in the ACC, North Carolina broke into the AVCA rankings for the first time since Aug. 31 after receiving votes every week since that point. The Tar Heels have won seven of their last eight matches with the most recent loss to No. 20 Florida State in five sets on Oct. 16.
The Series:
The Hokies trail the overall series with this weekend’s opponents, 26-33. Tech leads the series with NC State, 21-10, including a 3-1 win in September. North Carolina holds the lead with a 5-23 margin, taking the last meeting in four sets earlier this season.
Up Next:
The Hokies return home next weekend, serving as host to Syracuse Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. and Boston College Nov. 22 at 1 p.m.
