BLACKSBURG – Looking to bounce back after a tough weekend against Miami and then-ranked No. 15 Florida State, Virginia Tech travels to Notre Dame Friday at 7 p.m. before concluding the weekend at No. 22 Louisville Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Hokies hit the road with a 14-10 overall mark, 5-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Miami enters the weekend at 6-18 overall, 1-11 in the ACC while No. 22 Louisville owns the top position in the ACC with a 17-5 mark, 11-1 in conference play.
Lindsey Owens made her mark in Virginia Tech volleyball history last weekend against Miami by slugging her 1,000th kill, placing her in the 11th spot in Tech history. After her performances last weekend, she is 157 kills from a position in the top-10.
Amanda McKinzie, Kennedy Bryan, and Owens each downed double-digit kills against Miami while Rhegan Mitchell and Kyra Coundourides shared the assist column with 26 and 22 digs, respectively. Owens posted the lone double-double, upping the Hokies’ total to 31 this season, with 14 digs in addition to Kenedy McGrath’s team-high of 20.
Scouting the Fighting Irish:
Notre Dame serves as host this weekend following an 0-2 weekend at NC State and North Carolina. The Fighting Irish pushed the Wolfpack to four sets before falling short in the fifth. Despite the setbacks, Notre Dame comes in fourth in aces in the conference. ND is led by Sam Fry, averaging 3.05 kills per set, and Sydney Kuhk, averaging 2.00.
Scouting the Cardinals:
The 22nd-ranked Cardinals return home after a split weekend in North Carolina, falling to UNC before topping NC State. Louisville’s loss to the Tar Heel’s was the squad’s first loss in conference play and the first since Sept. 20. The Cardinals lead the ACC in opponent hitting percentage and kills per set while coming in second in hitting percentage, assists per set, and digs. The squad is led by Tess Clark with a .438 attack percentage, securing the top spot in the ACC while Erin Fairs owns the third spot in kills per set with 3.92.
The Series:
The Hokies hold a 6-22 against this weekend’s opponents. Tech and Notre Dame split their series 3-3. The pair has alternated wins over the last six meetings with neither team winning on the road. Louisville leads the series with the Hokies, 19-3. The two schools faced every year beginning in 1980 to 1994 until 2013 when the two played again as part of the ACC schedule.
