Tech falls to No. 15 Florida State

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Despite heavy back-and-forth action in set two, the Virginia Tech volleyball team could not overcome No. 15 Florida State on Sunday afternoon in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies dip to 14-10, 5-7 in the ACC while the Seminoles improve to 18-5, 11-1 in conference play.

The Hokies showed their fight in the second frame, forcing the squads to battle through nine tie scores and four lead changes. However, the ACC’s top-ranked Seminoles came out with the three set victory.

Senior Kennedy Bryan led the attack for the Hokies, downing nine kills while Lindsey Owens added seven. Jaila Tolbert slugged critical points for Tech, attacking at a .500 rate with five kills. Owens grounded the defense, collecting nine digs while Rhegan Mitchell and Kenedy McGrath added eight and seven, respectively.

The Seminoles’ Sarah Burrington paved the way to Florida State’s win, registering a team-high 10 kills. Melanie Keil hit 6-for-7 in the match. Libero Cecilie Woie tallied 13 digs to solidify the Seminoles’ win.

Tech tied up the match despite Florida State jumping on the board first to a four-point lead. Cara Cunningham tallied three blocks to hold back the Seminoles’ attack. However, Florida State prevailed to a 17-25 decision to open the match.

The score went back-and-forth to being the second frame until the Seminoles went on five point run. Powerful serving by Rhegan Mitchell allowed the Hokies to tie up the set a 14-14. The two squads fought through to the 21st point with neither team gaining more than a two-point edge until Florida State secured the win, 25-21.

The Seminoles showed their power in the final set, holding the Hokies to a .200 attack rate. Despite Amanda McKinzie’s .400 clip, the Hokies fell in three sets, 15-25.

The Hokies hit the road next weekend, traveling to Notre Dame Friday and No. 23 Louisville Sunday.
