Tech welcomes ACC opponents Miami and Florida State

Weekend Notes

BLACKSBURG – Beginning the second half of conference play, the Virginia Tech volleyball team welcomes its southern-most conference opponents to Cassell Coliseum this weekend, taking on Miami Friday at 7 p.m. before concluding with No. 15 Florida State Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN3.

The Hokies return home with a 14-8 record and an even 5-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Miami comes to Blacksburg with a 14-6 mark, 7-3 in the ACC while Florida State holds a 17-4 record, sharing the top spot in the ACC with a 10-0 mark.

A Haunted Cassell will serve as host to Friday night’s matchup with many Halloween-themed elements for fans, including music and giveaways. Trick-or-treating and Halloween crafts will take place on the concourse beginning at 6:15 p.m. with peanut/peanut butter-free candy. Kids dressed in costume are welcome to participated in a parade during the match.

Despite a 1-1 weekend in North Carolina, Tech collected five double-doubles with five Hokies setting or matching personal-best performances. Lindsey Owens registered a career-high of 24 digs at Duke while upping her career kills total to 999 – one kill away from the 1,000 kill milestone. Amanda McKinzie attacked at a .421 rate with 19 kills against Wake Forest while Rhegan Mitchell matched her personal-high of two aces in the same match. Katie Krueger upped her match-best to 13 kills, attacking at a .476 rate through the four set match at Duke as setter Kyra Coundourides assisted 30 Hokies attacks in the same match.

Scouting the Hurricanes:

Miami travels following a perfect 2-0 weekend at home, defeating both Boston College and Syracuse in straight sets. The Hurricanes have won seven of their last eight matches, with the lone loss at North Carolina who has been receiving votes in the AVCA all season. Outside hitters Olga Strantzali and Taylor Scott lead the Hurricanes, averaging 3.30 and 3.31 kills per set, respectively.

Scouting the Seminoles:

Florida State departs Tallahasee, Florida after a sweeping Syracuse and Boston College to share the top spot in the ACC with Louisville – the only other ranked team in the conference. Only three of the Seminoles 10 conference matches, have come down to five sets, each with FSU the ultimate victor. Florida State is led by Nicole Walsh with 293 kills, 115 kills ahead of Millica Kubura in second. ­­

The Series:

The Hokies hold an 11-43 record over this weekend’s ACC foes. Five of Tech’s seven wins over Miami have occurred under head coach Chris Riley. The Hokies are 4-4 at home against the Hurricanes since Riley took the helm in 2006. Tech trails the series against Florida State 4-28. However, each of the Hokies’ wins took place at home with the most recent upset in 2013.

The Hokies hit the road next weekend, facing Notre Dame Friday at 7 p.m. followed by No. 23 Louisville Sunday at 2 p.m.
