BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech volleyball team overcame Clemson’s early set leads to defeat the Tigers 3-0 on Friday night in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies improve to 13-6 overall, 4-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Tigers dip to 5-14, 0-7 in conference play.

The Hokies stumbled to start off the first two frames but walked away unscathed with a three-set win, marking their first sweep of Clemson since 2005.

Lindsey Owens and Kennedy Bryan steadied Tech’s offense, downing 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Owens registered a .355 attack percentage while collecting seven digs. Setter Rhegan Mitchell posted the loan double-double for the Hokies with 32 assists and 15 digs. Kenedy McGrath matched Mitchell’s digs to round out the defense that held the Tigers to a mere .026 clip.

Clemson’s Megan McGinley posted a team-high seven kills while Sydney Moseley fell narrowly behind with five. Taylor Daniel owned the assist column with 22 of the squad’s 23 sets. Despite Keelie Arneson’s 24 digs, the Hokies found the floor to secure the win.

Tech fell behind early in the opening frame to a 5-9 deficit. However, a Hokies’ timeout settled the team, allowing the offense to quickly tie up the set at 9-all with Kyra Coundourides on the line to serve. Through nine tie scores and three lead changes, Coundourides was back to serve with the Hokies at a 19-17 advantage. Tech rallied late in the stanza to clinch the 25-19 win.

Mirroring the first set, the Hokies slipped to the same 5-9 margin before tying it up at 9-9. The teams went back and forth until the 15th point. Owens slugged four kills with a .571 rate in the stanza. The Hokies rallied for seven points and walk away with the 25-19 victory.

Tech dominated the ball in the final set led by Ashley Battle’s back-to-back blocks and four kills. Katie Kruger, Bryan, and Owens added three apiece to round out the frame. The Tigers’ McGinley posted three kills of the squads nine but the Hokies’ prevailed to secure the win, 25-17.

Virginia Tech returns to Cassell Coliseum for its breast cancer awareness match on Sunday at 3:30 p.m., facing Clemson on ESPN3/RSN.
