CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Hokies opened the Commonwealth Clash with a first set win but ultimately fell to Virginia, 3-1 on Saturday night. Tech slides to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Cavaliers improve to 11-4 with a 3-1 ACC mark.
Middle blockers Kennedy Bryan and Ashley Battle paced the Hokies as Bryan downed a team-best nine kills and Battle attacked at a .500 rate with three blocks. Outside hitters Amanda McKinzie and Lindsey Owens posted an additional eight kills apiece. Freshman Jaila Tolbert slugged four kills in the match, three of which all came in the second set.
The Cavaliers' Anna Walsh led the squad, registering 15 kills and three blocks. Both Natalie Bausback and Haley Kole recorded 13 kills with Kole also collecting 13 digs for a double-double. Bausback posted a team-best seven blocks in the Virginia win.
The match started with back-and-forth action as neither the Hokies nor the Cavaliers gained more than a two-point lead through the 16 tie scored and 10 lead changes. Once the squads met the 19-19 mark, Tech forced a Virginia timeout following two errors. Battle closed out the set with two consecutive kills, giving the Hokies the set point. Then with Owens, the pair blocked a Virginia attempt, securing the 25-21 win.
The second set mirrored the first as the teams continued to trade off the lead through the 21st point. The squads were even 10 times throughout the stanza with four lead changes. Tolbert went 3-for-4, sharing a block with Rhegan Mitchell in the frame to keep the Hokies alive. Virginia called a timeout to breakup Tech's three-point rally and eventually closed out the set with back-to-back kills by Walsh, 25-21.
The Hokies fell behind early in the third frame. Tech fought back to tie up the score three times but were unable to recover the deficit. The Cavaliers hit at a .450 rate to secure the 2-1 lead with a 25-13 decision.
Tech returned to the court fighting the the fourth set as both Owens and Bryan downed three kills. Tolbert and Owens connected for a block but the Cavaliers prevailed to a 25-17 win.
With a victory today by Virginia volleyball, the Cavaliers have added half a point for their school to the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash.
