BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Led by Indiana Invitational’s all-tournament team member Ashley Battle, the Virginia Tech volleyball team secured the final win of the weekend over Bowling Green on Saturday night, 3-1. The Hokies improve to 7-2 while the Falcons drop to 3-7.

Battle paced the Hokies throughout the four sets, downing nine kills of a .667 clip with a team-high of three blocks. The tandem of Amanda McKinzie and Lindsey Owens collected double-digit kills with Owens also recording her second double-double of the day. Rhegan Mitchell set and matched her career high today of 28 assists, also registering a double-double with 10 digs.

The Falcons’ Jelena Sunjic and Nicole Slimko struck 12 kills apiece for the squad. Katie Scholten assisted 32 of Bowling Green’s total of 34. Alyssa Maloney owned the Falcons’ net with three solo blocks and five total in the contest.

Despite Bowling Green earning the first point of the match, Tech quickly tied it up and took off from there. The Hokies rallied late in the set to force the Falcons to call a timeout, but Tech prevailed to the decisive 25-15 victory. As a team, the Hokies attacked at a .464 rate with five hitting .500 or better. Cara Cunningham was a perfect 3-for-3 in the set.

The Hokies were off to an early lead in the second frame but the Falcons fought back to tie it up at 13-all. Battle downed five of six attempts throughout the set advancing the Hokies on the board. The lead changed throughout the remainder of the set until Tech took off from a 19-19 mark. McKinzie closed out the second frame with consecutive aces in the 25-20 victory.

Despite Tech’s early advantage in the third set, the Falcons claimed the victory once evening up the score at 18. Even with Owens’ four kills, Bowling Green rolled through the set and clinch the 25-20 decision.

Battle came out strong in the fourth set with two kills to give Tech an early 4-1 lead. Bowling Green kept it close with a three-point margin, but the Falcons could not overcome the Hokies. Owens 16th and final kill of the night closed out the match with a Tech win, 25-15.

Virginia Tech returns home next weekend, serving as host of the Hokie Invitational. Tech will face Middle Tennessee on Friday followed by Chattanooga and Liberty on Saturday.
